Task 3- Target Audience

Here is a sample of the Rom-Com Questionnaire

The Rom-Com Findings showed that 50% prefer the Rom-Com to be about a boy's life as the majority of the people thought that the film is funnier when its about a boy's life. The other 50% wanted the Rom-Com to be about a Girl's Life as its stereotypically a girly film. The findings also showed that 90% of the people who did the questionnaire prefer a non predictable ending, as it gives the story a twist. Also 90% would rather watch a Rom-Com about a Girls/Boys life ages 16-25, the other 10% prefer 25+. The results also showed what characters people would want to see in a Rom-Com, my findings showed that 26% expected the main character to be a girl and 23% expected it to be a boy. 26% also said they would expect to see a best friend and 2% wanted to see a nerd and the other 8% expected a bully. My findings also showed that 10% want the couple to be together at the start, 30% wanted them to get together in the middle of the film and 60% wanted them to be together at the end. I also asked whether the setting in a rom-com should take place in a home, school, at work, outdoors, social environment or all of the listed. The results showed that 17% liked rom-coms to take pace at home, 8% at school, 17% at work, and 0% for both outdoors and social place, however 58% said all of the above. Also 80% think that incedental music is important during a rom-com. 43% expect to hear happy music, 15% want to hear sad, 14% pop, and 7% for Rock, RnB and Instrumental Jazz.

Here are a sample of the other questionnaires for thriller and Horror.

Rom-Com
A Rom-com is a sub-genre of Comedy and Romance films combined, they can also be known as 'romedies'. They are targetted at the female teenage audience aged 13-17, who likes to read romantic novels and watching films based around love and romance. The characters, which appear in a Rom-Com, are usually a man and women who meet and are apparently meant for each other. They are mainly light-hearted, humorous plotlines showing that true love can defeat any obstacles in the way. The setting is mostly an everyday setting, making it more realistic to the audience; they contain real life situations, stereotypical characters, glamorous costumes and friendship groups. The top rated rom-com at the box office is ‘Pretty Women'.

Horror
Horror movies play on the audiences hidden fears and nightmares, by startling them. Horrors can also link in too the fantasy, supernatural and thriller genre. The typical setting for a horror movie is in an isolated or small community, abandonned houses and graveyards. The typical storyline in a horror movie is good vs evil, Murder, Supernatural, Darkness and nightmare.

Thriller

The average age rating for a thriller is 15. The definition of the thriller genre is that a person or thing stalks someone to kill them, its normally has an exciting and mysterious plot. There is a difference between horrors and thrillers as horrors are more about making the audience jump by showing gory scenes, where as a thrillers is more psychological and makes the audience think. The protagonist in these films is set against a problem – an escape, a mission, or a mystery. The cover-up of important information from the viewer, and fight and chase scenes are common methods in all of the thriller subgenres, although each subgenre has its own unique characteristics and methods. The thriller genre was first introduced in the 1920’s and since then there have been a variety of sub genre thrillers such as action thriller, crime thriller, drama thriller, spy thriller, horror thriller and many more. Plots of thrillers involve characters which come into conflict with each other or with outside forces – the threat is sometimes abstract or unseen. An atmosphere of creepy menace and sudden violence, such as crime and murder, characterize thrillers. Thrillers often present the world and society as dark, corrupt and dangerous.

This table shows the films that were realeased in the Uk and Republic of Ireland by genre in 2010, ranked by gross box office. The genre which made the most £million and had the most releases was Comedy.
