Evaluation

1-In What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

At the beginning of making our opening sequence, we decided it would be best to do a cross-genre with rom-com and thriller. This idea was that the two people fall in love but the girl is a vampire and she tries to go against her powers, this was inspired on watching ‘Just like Heaven’. However, as we started to make the film our ideas evolved and the genre changed to making an opening sequence of a thriller, where a girl died and then she started haunting a man, who kept seeing her and he doesn’t know why. We also thought this was a good genre to do as our target audience is teenagers aged 15+ and we found from doing the questionnaires thriller was the genre that was most popular for the audience. The opening film sequence has a various range of effects to make the film look like the thriller genre. The music which appears over the top of the opening scene is incidental music at a slow pace which builds up the tension, the music is called ‘Measured pace’ we didn’t adjust the sound level on this as it was loud enough to be able to build atmosphere. This is conventional in thriller films because it gets the audience on the edge of their seats.

The opening title sequence was inspired by ‘Edward Scissor hands’ where the writing is obscure and placed on a black background, we found that this created tension and got the audience thinking about the will happen in the film. We took the idea of linking the title with the opening credits and decided by having stereotypical horror looking writing, this gives the audience the impression that something in the film is not in the ordinary. The background is black, and links in with the title ‘seeing the unseen’ because in the dark (black background) people can’t see, only what is shown to them which are the writing. We challenged the film conventions ‘thriller’ by having a green screen of fast falling snow over the top of all the opening credits. By having snow it shows that something in the film might be cold hearted or isolated from others. To link the film with the thriller genre, we adjusted the brightness/contrast so that they were both higher making the video clips darker than when they were taken, half way through the opening scene we changed the tone to a dark blue following the traditional ways of making a thriller/horror film. It was also inspired by the film‘se7en’ as throughout the opening scene the lighting was dark, building the tension up in the audience. We changed it by using the fast colour changer effect in Adobe Premier pro.

At the start of the film we challenged the genre by using the green screen so that we could have a ghostly looking girl appear every now and then in the film, while a boy wearing a is walking through the town, the girl is dressed in black adding to the dark themed setting. We also layered film clips over the top of one another, with one having nobody walking, and the other having the girl walking 'through the gate' we then changed the opacity of the girl walking which made her seem like she is walking through the gate as a ghost. By having a girl as the ghost in the film, this is going again the conventions of a thriller. The slow paced music is still running throughout this scene, there is ambient music of birds tweeting while the boy is walking. Also, when the girl appears there is a loud gust of wind sound, which is inclined to make the girl seem like she has a power. The setting of our opening scene is in a ruined down area, which contrasts with the smart suit the boy is wearing. We did this so that it got the audience asking questions about the boy and his background history.
2-How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our film represents the low class and high class. The setting, in which the film is being taken place, it shows the low class as at the beginning of the film, the setting is in a ruined down street, the audience can tell this by the graffiti sprayed on to the brick wall, indicating that it may not be a very nice place to live. As the film goes on, the setting changes to a ruined down park, you can tell this by the lack of people around them and the fact the grass doesn’t look like it has been looked after. However, the high class is shown through what the boy is wearing. He is in a smart suit with tie, this gets the audience question why he has a suit on and maybe he only wears a suit outside to try and show he is from a posh background, but behind closed doors he isn’t from the high class at all, or maybe he has got a really good job which required him to wear a suit. The age of the characters are both 16+ as our questionnaire findings showed that 90% of the audience would rather watch a film about a Girl/Boys life aged 16-25, so that they can relate. We went against the thriller convention and had a boy and girl staring in the film, as it brings in the rom-com genre.

3- What Kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The film production which is most likely to distribute our film is 'Hammer Films' as they are known best for releasing Gothic Horror Films since 1934, and is well known in the UK. Hammer Films have dominated the horror film industry before; as they had a partnership with Warner Bros.Hammer film productions have made over 150 action-adventure, thrillers, horrors and historic films. Including 'The Women in Black', this is also a thriller film about a ghost haunting a man, to get revenge. Another production studio that is more likely to distribute our film is 'Universal Studios'. As it’s a worldwide famous film company and they are known best for producing action-thriller films such as Iron Man, The wolf man, Harry Potter etc.

4-Who Would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for our media production is rated 12A, as with it the film there is moderate physical and psychological threats being made. It is aimed for teenagers and young adults as the characters within the film are of this age range, this makes it so that it is easier for the audience to relate to the film. We have gone against the convention of thrillers as they are mostly aimed for males, as the main characters in the films are dominated by males. Whereas our film has been made to attract both male and females, we did this by making the characters both genders. We have targeted the working class as the setting in the film is in a working class area, which the audience will be familiar with. The characters seen in the film are Caucasian, so therefore we have targeted the Caucasian ethnic group so they can relate to the film.

5-How did you attract/address your audience?

The film opening grabs our targeted audience attention through the storyline, music, characters, how they are dressed and the title sequence. With the genre being a thriller, we had to make sure that our film had scary and spooky elements to it so that it fitted with in the thriller criteria, and got the audience sitting on the edge of their seats. The title of our film is 'seeing the unseen', the title in itself will attract the targeted audiences attention as it explains the story line, of the man seeing the ghost that nobody else can see. Also the title sequence with the music, both work together as it starts the film off with a lonely, mysterious atmosphere. The music we have used is incidental music played throughout the whole of our opening scene, the music is slow paced at the beginning and builds up over time towards the end, this attracts the audience as it gets them asking questions about the film, and to why the boy is seeing the girl and random points, and why nobody else can see her. The film can attract the audience through the characters and what they are wearing, as the boy is wearing a light grey suit which shows he is the protagonist, which the working class will be able to relate to. The ghostly girl is dressed in black, showing that she is the antagonised. The clothes the girl is wearing is a typical teenage school girl look, which attracts the teenage audience as they will feel like she is from the same social class as them. The storyline attracts the target audience as most teenagers have gone through a loss of a close family member or friend. So they can connect to the film which will make it scarier for the viewers.

To promote our film to the targeted audience, we would have billboards, posters and trailers playing at the beginning of other thriller films that have the same targeted audience; this will make it easier for our film to get across to the viewers. The posters and billboards, will have bold dark colours with white horror looking font so that it links in with the opening scene, the posters won’t give away too much about the film as we don’t want the audience to look at it and already know the storyline.

6-What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In terms of technology I have learnt a various range of new skills, such as how to use the Sony HD Cameras for filming, Adobe Premiere for the editing, and how to make and use my own blog. The Sony HD Camera was pretty straight forward in terms of videoing, however we had to make sure that we had the correct angles for the scene, and the camera had a SD card inserted into it. I then learnt how to import the film clips into an Apple Mac Computer, so it allowed us to edit it by using Adobe Premiere. To make our logo which appears at the very beginning of the film, we used photoshop which I was already familiar with. However, I wasn’t very familiar with Adobe Premier, and I learnt how to import videos, green screen shots, music and pictures on the programme, this was very quick and easy to do. I also learnt how to Razor a clip so that it would cut in between the middle of it, and I also learnt how to add video effects and transactions, from the dissolve at the beginning of the film to the Fast Colour change in the middle of the film, to the Fade into black at the very end of the opening scene.

7-Looking back at your prelianary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

By doing the preliminary task we were only able to use the building as our setting this restricted us in doing a lot of our ideas. However, I have learnt by working in a group making a film, everybody has their own separate ideas which then everybody comes together and agrees with one and build on it. When actually going in to making the film, everyone in the group picks the job they want to do and then this is their role in the film throughout. Then at the end of film making all the jobs come together to make a successful film. In terms of operating the video camera we learnt all the basic skills required to use the camera e.g. On/Off, Zoom, Delete, Watch. It was easy enough to figure out how to use the video camera as the buttons had pictures on indicating what they do. When filming we always made sure that we remembered the 180 degree rule, however as the setting was inside an office it wasn’t always easy to follow the rule, so therefore for our final film, we made sure that we could apply the 180 degree rule. We applied all the knowledge to the major production so that it is successful.

Task 3- Target Audience

Here is a sample of the Rom-Com Questionnaire

The Rom-Com Findings showed that 50% prefer the Rom-Com to be about a boy's life as the majority of the people thought that the film is funnier when its about a boy's life. The other 50% wanted the Rom-Com to be about a Girl's Life as its stereotypically a girly film. The findings also showed that 90% of the people who did the questionnaire prefer a non predictable ending, as it gives the story a twist. Also 90% would rather watch a Rom-Com about a Girls/Boys life ages 16-25, the other 10% prefer 25+. The results also showed what characters people would want to see in a Rom-Com, my findings showed that 26% expected the main character to be a girl and 23% expected it to be a boy. 26% also said they would expect to see a best friend and 2% wanted to see a nerd and the other 8% expected a bully. My findings also showed that 10% want the couple to be together at the start, 30% wanted them to get together in the middle of the film and 60% wanted them to be together at the end. I also asked whether the setting in a rom-com should take place in a home, school, at work, outdoors, social environment or all of the listed. The results showed that 17% liked rom-coms to take pace at home, 8% at school, 17% at work, and 0% for both outdoors and social place, however 58% said all of the above. Also 80% think that incedental music is important during a rom-com. 43% expect to hear happy music, 15% want to hear sad, 14% pop, and 7% for Rock, RnB and Instrumental Jazz.

Here are a sample of the other questionnaires for thriller and Horror.

Rom-Com
A Rom-com is a sub-genre of Comedy and Romance films combined, they can also be known as 'romedies'. They are targetted at the female teenage audience aged 13-17, who likes to read romantic novels and watching films based around love and romance. The characters, which appear in a Rom-Com, are usually a man and women who meet and are apparently meant for each other. They are mainly light-hearted, humorous plotlines showing that true love can defeat any obstacles in the way. The setting is mostly an everyday setting, making it more realistic to the audience; they contain real life situations, stereotypical characters, glamorous costumes and friendship groups. The top rated rom-com at the box office is ‘Pretty Women'.

Horror
Horror movies play on the audiences hidden fears and nightmares, by startling them. Horrors can also link in too the fantasy, supernatural and thriller genre. The typical setting for a horror movie is in an isolated or small community, abandonned houses and graveyards. The typical storyline in a horror movie is good vs evil, Murder, Supernatural, Darkness and nightmare.

Thriller

The average age rating for a thriller is 15. The definition of the thriller genre is that a person or thing stalks someone to kill them, its normally has an exciting and mysterious plot. There is a difference between horrors and thrillers as horrors are more about making the audience jump by showing gory scenes, where as a thrillers is more psychological and makes the audience think. The protagonist in these films is set against a problem – an escape, a mission, or a mystery. The cover-up of important information from the viewer, and fight and chase scenes are common methods in all of the thriller subgenres, although each subgenre has its own unique characteristics and methods. The thriller genre was first introduced in the 1920’s and since then there have been a variety of sub genre thrillers such as action thriller, crime thriller, drama thriller, spy thriller, horror thriller and many more. Plots of thrillers involve characters which come into conflict with each other or with outside forces – the threat is sometimes abstract or unseen. An atmosphere of creepy menace and sudden violence, such as crime and murder, characterize thrillers. Thrillers often present the world and society as dark, corrupt and dangerous.

This table shows the films that were realeased in the Uk and Republic of Ireland by genre in 2010, ranked by gross box office. The genre which made the most £million and had the most releases was Comedy.

Textual Analysis of 'The Princess Diaries 2'

At the beginning of princess diaries 2, it shows a black screen with the writing ' Walt Disney presents' the camera then pans from the black screen which soon appears to the audience to be coming from a students graduation robe. There is natural light used which makes the screen bright.

There is happy instrumental music played over the top of the opening scene. There is also dialogue used, the first word that is said that stands out is 'diplomas' this tells the viewer that it is set in a university in America. the president then says 'all going out into the world as individuals' this gives us the idea that we will be following one of the grad students lives. It then cuts to the parents watching the graduation, a mum and dad stand out in the crowd as shes wearing a red dress which could show love and happiness, and the father is in a suit which indicates he is proud and confident, they look like they are wealthy as the lady is pregnant. The camera angle then changes to a vertical tracking of all the mortarboards being thrown in the air, the sky is blue and the atmosphere is happy. The camera then cuts to a close up of a couple of mortarboards and behind them appears to be a tiara, indicating that there is a princess that goes to the university, this links in with the title. The title of the film comes up as the tiara is in the air, a writing is gold and written in a royal font it says ' The Princess Diaries 2- Royal Engagment'.

the camera angle goes into a master shot of all the friendship groups hugging and being cheerful, this puts the audience in a happy mood, and to expect a love story not a horror. The friendship group that the camera is focused on has a body guard standing next to them. The bodyguard is wearing small black glasses and a suit, he escorts the 'princess' out, you don't see her face while she walks towards the right side of the camera. It cuts to a sunset with an aeroplane going through the sky, it then cuts to inside the plane and horizontal tracks from the waitresses legs to the diary which the girl is reading through. There is a voice over of what the girl is thinking while flicking through her diary, telling the audience all about her life and what has happened since the first film. On the plane the seats a a brown leather and the air hostess is wearing a red uniform, this colour indicates royal and links back to her mothers dress, making the audience wonder if she is going back home. the voice over says ' I can't believe it's been 5 years since grandma told me I was a princess'. There is flash backs to her passed used here showing her reaction when she was told and her mum and her mums boyfriend being happy together, expecting a baby. The camera then goes back to to her on the aeroplane and we now see an over shoulder shot of her looking through her diary of what's already happened. After having an insight into the princess life the audience are left wondering where she's going  and what's going to happen. Next we see a subjective point of view looking through the aeroplanes window showing the town of Genovia. The light in the town appears to be bright and the town looks like it's been looked after. There is an aerial shot going from a tilt to zooming out as the red car, which indicates the royal princess has arrived, leading to the palace. Incidental music is played over the top of the scene which compliments it as it gives it a sense of posh and royal.  The Camera angles goes in to a Master shot showing the bodyguards outside of the castle in purple suits, which are the same colour as the flower beds. Then the camera cuts to a lady wearing a grey suit holding a red folder, there is dialogue used and shes says  'welcome home Princess'

Textual analysis of 'Edward scissorhands'

The opening of 'Edward scissorhands' we see the 20th century fox logo, there is snow coming down quick around it, from this we can guess that it's going to be a lonely sad film, and not a love or comedy. There is incidental music playing throughout the opening credits, the music is a mysterious instrumental song and changes Every time a new title comes up, the music starts off instrumental with children's voices, this makes the film have a dark nature effect to it . It fades out to a close up of a machine which is possibly in a factory, the camera angle doesn't show the audience the surrounding of the machinery, it leaves them wondering. the camera then tilts  and forward tracks towards a door, the door is an old fashioned black castle door, this gives the impression that its a horror or something scary is going to happen. The caption 'Edward scissorhands' comes flying on the screen and the tempo of the music gets faster and the frequency gets louder. The words tall, thin and white which makes them stand out on the black background, they are tilted which indicates that something is not right the word Edwards comes away from the scissor hands in a scissor like motion, the camera zooms in at where the blade would be if they were a pair of scissors. The camera pans around gargoyles that are covered in spiderwebs, this gives the audience the impression that its not looked after and no one lives there. It then forward tracks up the stairs, there is little light used here giving it a haunted effect. There is lots of extreme close ups of machinery with captions that are at an angle. The machinery all represent a body part such as hands, face, body and shapes. This shows that maybe the machinery is creating a human, like Frankenstein.

The camera zooms out of the mansion sitting on a hill top on its own surrounded by snow, this shows that it's isolated and lonely. The camera then zooms out showing the back of an old women's head, the audience then realise that they were looking thought the subjective s point of view. The women walks away from the window towards the bed, the bedroom has an old fashioned fireplace and loads of snow globes on top of the fire place. The angles goes to a two shot showing the old lady sitting on a big arm chair and the little girl in bed waiting for a story, the fact there is a little girl indicates to the audience that it cant be that scary. There is dialogue used and the old women says ' I guess we would have to start with scissors' it's then we realise the lady is going to tell the story.

The camera cuts back to inside the castle, looking through Edward scissors hands eyes showing the neighbourhood. The homes have lights coming from them, which gives the neighbourhood a loving look , the camera then zooms out to over the shoulder shot showing Edward looking out the window. In the next scene, the camera shows the neighbourhood in day light, all the houses, cars and clothes are pastel bright colours which gives the film a sense of fairy tale and makes the audience more relaxed about the film. The lighting and colours show that the film isn't going to be all horror. It has some love elements to it. The camera angle then cuts to an Avon lady getting turned down by all neighbours and she gets back into her car and looks through her mirror to find the mysterious castle in her reflections, the darkness of the castle contrasts with the rest of the neighbourhood. The audience are left on the edge of their seats as the Avon lady drives up to the castle,
